500cc motorcycles are a good choice for new riders who think they will outgrow a 250cc bike too fast. Not too much for a starter and powerful enough to make you feel you really are in control. This is the 500cc class.
However, as a new rider, you might take into consideration that bikes are dangerous (ok, we all know that) and 500cc is twice 250cc, so you might wanna consider starting with a less powerful bike. But if you have already decided to go with 500cc, then here’s the list of 500cc motorcycles you should consider (I’m speaking sport bikes here, not cruisers or choppers):
Honda CBR 500R
If we speak about Honda CBR 500R we should start with the fact that the price is $5999, less than half of the cost of the average crotch rocket. A good starting point for a sport bike that has a lot of things to offer.
With a dry weight of 401 lbs, a 4-stroke engine, a power of 46 HP at 8500 rpm, 6-speed transmission and a seat height of 30,9 inches, 2013 Honda CBR 500R is a versatile bike that replaced somehow Kawasaki Ninja 500R, filling the gap that remained after the 500cc Kawi was discountinued. Useful and handy around town, powerful enough to keep up on the highway. When riding it you feel virtually no vibrations. If you are looking for the perfect sportbike, 500R may not be what you are looking for, but if you are searching for the perfect first bike, well, you might just found it! Intuitive, easy to ride, well priced, astonishing quality, Honda CBR500R, one of the best 500cc bikes around.
Kawasaki Ninja 500R
Again, Kawasaki Ninja 500R is a great if not the greatest choice for beginner riders since it’s easy to handle, powerful enough and super versatile. At the same time it is a crotch rocket loved by experienced riders on a budget, delivering uniform power at every speed, stable handling and great performance while saving gas big time. It was the best selling bike of the brand for a long while. Price for 2009 model is only $5049 At this moment, this bike is not in production anymore so you will have to settle for a second hand one. 2006 Suzuki GS 500F
Suzuki GS 500F is based on a line started by Suzuki in 1989 with Suzuki GS500E and continued from 2004 with Suzuki GS500F. Pay attention when you buy one of these models since they may be restricted in some countries under the maximum power-to-weight ratio restrictions. The fact that being restricted in some countries made out of it one of the most famous 500cc motorcycles out there.
Suzuki GS500F has a 4-stroke parallel twin cylinder 487 cc engine that gives a top speed of 175 km/h (108 mph). The bike accelerates from 0 to 100km/h in 5-6 seconds.
GS500F offers to it’s biker a smooth, comfortable ride, great riding experience and a lot of fun. It’s a sport bike that is easy to maintain, it offers a great control and great handling.
In just a few words I would say that 500cc motorcycles (and we only covered here a short list at the moment) are a lot of fun. They are strong, fast and powerful enough for a highway race, easy to handle and to maintain and all these for a price around $5-6k. 500cc bikes are a great choice for beginners and for people who want to commute.
